Registration has started for the first-ever Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) 2012 conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The three-hour test will be conducted from February 20-28, 2012, in 61 cities.

Following a Supreme Court order, the AICTE launched the national test to replace state-level exams and reduce the pressure of students writing multiple exams. CMAT scores are to be used for entry to postgraduate management courses both at degree and diploma levels in AICTE-approved institutions/university departments. There are about 4000 AICTE-approved institutions for MBA/PGDBM, for four lakh seats, in the country.

Since this is the first year of the test, it is learnt that institutions can accept the scores from one of the following five tests CAT, MAT, GMAT of the US and CMAT in this admission cycle.

According to Isaac, the CMAT will be mandatory for institutes to consider for admissions in 2013. He also says that now as well as even from 2013, the CMAT will exclude about 100-200 institutions, such as the IIMs, business schools of IITs and a number of Central and state universities, including the University of Delhi. All those which are not governed by AICTE will continue with their tests.

Minority institutions will conduct admissions as per the provision available for such categories.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants in their final year bachelor’s degree course are also eligible to apply, provided they complete their graduation requirements including practical examinations / viva / assignments before May 31, 2012. All applicants should have completed a minimum of 15 years of regular education (on 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 basis). Applicants who have completed their graduation on a one-time sitting basis or on a 2-year basis are not eligible.

Admission Procedure

Applicants may seek admission through IBSAT and Interview process.

IBSAT is an Aptitude Test. IBSAT is of two hours duration and consists of multiple choice questions. IBSAT 2011 will be conducted on December 24, 2011. Please refer the IBSAT 2011 Application Material at www.ibsat.org.

Applicants can apply by filling up the Application Form online here and making payment of 1,200 towards the cost using Credit/Debit Card or Internet Banking.

GMAT and CAT 2011 scores are also accepted by IBS. The GMAT Code number of IBS is 7061. Applicants with GMAT score of 550 and above are exempted from appearing for IBSAT. Applicants with GMAT/CAT 2011 scores have to download the Application Form from www.ibsat.org, complete it and send it along with the respective score card and a Demand Draft of INR 1,200 towards the cost, on or before January 31, 2012 to the IBSAT Office, 52, Nagarjuna Hills, Punjagutta, Hyderabad - 500082. How to Apply
Step 1:
Candidates seeking admission to FMS-BHU will be required to purchase CAT 2011 (conducted by IIMs) Voucher and appear in CAT 2011 (for details see CAT-2011 Notification in prominent dailies or visit www.catiim.in). Selection will be made strictly on the basis of the Combined Merit acquired by a Candidate in CAT 2011 (50% weightage), Academic Record (20% weightage) and Group Discussion & Interview (30% weightage).

The FMS, BHU uses CAT for short-listing the candidates for its two-year full time PostGraduate Programmes in Management. IIMs have no role either in the selection process or in the conduct of the programme.

Step 2:
Candidates are also required to register at FMS, BHU through separate application form which has to be obtained from Faculty of Management Studies, BHU, Varanasi from September 01, 2011 either in person against crossed SBI Bank Draft (MICR) /Banker’s Cheque of Rs. 1000/- (Rs. 650/- for SC/ST) till November 26, 2011 OR by post through a requisition along with Crossed SBI Bank Draft (MICR) of Rs. 1050/- (Rs. 700/- for SC/ST) and self-addressed envelope of 32x26 cm. till November 5, 2011 OR may be downloaded from the web site of BHU (www.bhu.ac.in or www.fmsbhu.ac.in). The downloaded application form must be submitted along with demand draft of Rs. 1000/- (Rs. 650/- for SC/ST Category). In a move that will cut down the multiple entrance exams that students are forced to take for admission to management courses across the country, the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to conduct a common admission test from 2012-13. The test will cover admissions to MBA and PG diploma in management courses in government and private colleges.

The decision to hold a pan-India Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) was taken at the executive council meeting of the AICTE, the umbrella body for professional courses. While CMAT will be one of the entrance exams to be held in 2012, the Council wants all its colleges and institutes to admit students based on their CMAT scores from 2013. “Almost every college was holding entrance exams. Besides, each state has its own tests, and private associations their own exams.

A NEW CHAPTER

•AICTE has decided to hold a Common Management Admission Test for MBA and PG diploma in management courses

•Although CMAT will be held in 2012 too, from 2013 all admissions will be based on CMAT scores

•But IIMs and deemed universities can hold their own tests ‘Single test will reduce stress on students’

According to AICTE chairman S S Mantha, in principle, the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) will be for all AICTE-approved institutes and will reduce stress and financial burden on students.
However,the Indian Institutes of Management, which are independent and autonomous B-schools, will continue to conduct the CAT . Deemed universities will also hold their individual entrance tests. But admission to 4,000 colleges that offer MBA and 500 which run diploma programmes will take place on the basis of the CMAT.
“We still have to work out the modalities of conducting the CMAT. But having so many exams, all of varied difficulty levels, also raises concerns about the quality of students who enter this course,” Mantha added. It is for the first time that the AICTE has spoken about holding an entrance exam; to date, it has largely been an approval-seeking body for new colleges and institutes wanting to expand student intake.
The Management Aptitude Test, which is taken by 3.85 lakh students every year, is currently the largest Bschool entrance test.

In a far-reaching decision, the Ministry of Health, Medical Council of India and the CBSE have agreed to conduct a common all-India entrance test for admission to all medical colleges across the country from next year.

From 2012, the CBSE will conduct the proposed common medical entrance test for entry to all private and government medical colleges in India (close to 300 colleges of which about 180 are private).

Close to 8 lakh students take UG medical entrance tests annually but at present they sit for different tests, including the All India PMT which the CBSE conducts and various state-level medical entrance tests. The decision now is that the CBSE will hold one test; it has the experience of conducing the largest entrance test in India - AIEEE for engineering entrance which close to 11 lakh students take every year.

A common test will ensure uniformity in UG medical education across states where private colleges are in the practice of charging exorbitant sums for admitting students. This arbitrariness in UG medical admissions has resulted in seats being sold and purchased.

The MCI will prepare the course structure for the test and put it on the website for comments of people, said MCI BOG member DR Purushottam Lal. The decision, he said, came in the wake of the Supreme Court orders to the MCI to go ahead with one test for UG medical admissions to avoid stress to students.

One test will ensure quality students entering medical education because states would be obliged to fill seats in their respective jurisdictions with students who figure in the All-India merit list. They would be free to prefer students from their areas but they won’t be able to compromise on merit.

600 More MBBS seats like AIIMS

2012 academic session and the medical colleges of the six AIIMS-like institutions will be open to undergraduate medical education (MBBS). The construction of the six medical colleges — each with 100 MBBS seats — will be completed in August.

However, the super-speciality hospitals, which are being built along with the colleges will be completed by 2012. They will be functional from the next year.

In total, each AIIMS-like institution has been built at nearly Rs 847 crore, up from Rs 332 crore that was originally estimated.

Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Wednesday: "The medical colleges in the six AIIMS-like institutions will start operating from the next year. The super-speciality hospitals will follow."

Around 94 eminent scientists, doctors and academicians have applied for the posts of directors in these six institutes. A health ministry's search-and-selection panel is finalizing the names of six directors from these aspirants' list. The colleges are located at Patna, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur and Rishikesh under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

"Constructing the medical colleges took 15-18 months. Civil work will end by August-September. There will be 600 additional MBBS seats. The hospitals will be ready next year. Each will have 960 beds, including 500 beds for the medical college hospital, 300 beds for speciality/super speciality and 100 beds for ICU/accident trauma,"an official said.

In the second phase of PMSSY, the government has also approved setting up of two more such institutions.Union health secretary K Chandramouli told TOI that "the present schedule is to admit MBBS students from 2012. The hospital will be ready a year later."

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) kick-started the admission process for the 1500 'displaced' students on Saturday. After the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recently disqualified six engineering colleges under GTU, the university was forced to accommodate these students in other engineering colleges.

The admission-cum-transfer process will continue till Monday in which colleges will be allocated to almost 450 students on a daily basis. These engineering students belong to six different engineering colleges of Vadnagar, Jamnagar, Navsari, Porbandar, Amreli and Surendranagar, operating under the GTU.

They were started under Gujarat government's much hyped formula of Public Private Partnership(PPP). But, these colleges failed to maintain their teaching standards, which made both students and AICTE furious.

The state government had decided to begin the PPP engineering colleges last year and filled up the seats as it expected AICTE approval to come through.

However, AICTE realised that these seats were filled up without its approval, hence disqualified the PPP colleges one week ago.

Acting swiftly, GTU decided to re-allocate seats to these students, without any extra burden of fees. According to MN Patel, Chairman of Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC), almost 1200 students of 4th semester and 250 students of 2nd semester of six different branches will be allocated new colleges as per the GTU rules.

On Saturday 468 students of civil and electrical engineering were given seats. Students of mechanical, computer science, electronics and instrumentation and control will be allocated their seats on Sunday and Monday.

GTU exam re-scheduled
Gujarat Technological University has decided to re-schedule the exam of one subject in MBA 3rd semester. The corporate taxation and financial planning exam will now be taken on January 12.

Earlier, the exam for the subject was held on January 6. But later it was revealed that the question paper was the same as one that was given in an internal exam. Thus GTU decided to cancel the exam and re-scheduled it on January 12 from 10.30am to 1pm.

Nationality:
The applicant for admission should be a Resident / Non Resident Indian National.

Qualifying Examination:

Candidates appearing for the VITEEE-2011 should have either completed or shall be appearing in 2011, in any one of the following qualifying examinations:
• The final examination of the 10+2 system of Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the State Board; Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE, New Delhi); Th e Council for Indian School Certifi cate Examination (ISCE, New Delhi).
• Intermediate or Two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
• High School Certifi cate Examination of the Cambridge University. Candidates who have studied in Regular, Full time and Formal Education are alone eligible to apply.

Eligibility Criteria in the Qualifying examination:

Candidates appearing for the VITEEE in 2011 should have secured an aggregate of 60% in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology in the qualifying examination (+2/ Intermediate).
The average marks obtained in the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology (PCM / PCB) in +2 (or its equivalent) put together should be 50% for the following categories:
• Candidates belonging to SC/ST
Fill in the proforma as given in Appendix-VII and have it attested by a competent authority (Th e list of authorities empowered for the same is given in Appendix-VII).
• Candidates hailing from Jammu and Kashmir and the North Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
